Species, Science and Society is a book about what is happening to our planet's species and the science that explores them — and what we can do about it.
As millions of species face near-certain extinction, we are neglecting the science that discovers, describes and classifies them.
Continuing to ignore systematics, we risk:
Molecular genetics is creating exciting new data for systematics. However, instead of being used to advance the mission of systematics, it is distracting from species exploration at a time of mass extinction.
There will be no second chances to explore earth's species. No other species-rich worlds to explore. Nowhere else to turn for clues to inspire a sustainable future. It is time for a taxonomic renaissance and planetary-scale species inventory.
Species, Science and Society takes the reader behind the scenes of a centuries-old, yet widely misunderstood, science. Written with passion, authority and humor, S3 reveals a surprisingly humane side of science as it presents a sobering look at what is at stake if we continue to ignore systematics.
